Rețele Electrice Muntenia completed the first stage of modernization of the energy infrastructure in five localities in Giurgiu through a project worth over 55 million lei co-financed via POIM 2014-2020

București – Rețele Electrice Muntenia (company part of PPC Group, previously called E-Distribuţie Muntenia) completed in December 2023 the first stage of a project totaling over 55.35 million lei, VAT included, of which the updated eligible value is over 38 million lei, which consists in the modernization of the energy infrastructure in Giurgiu municipality, as well as from Oinacu, Plopşoru, Braniştea and Daiţa localities in the same county.

The modernization component of a part of the medium and low voltage networks in the localities targeted within the project is co-financed from the European Regional Development Fund through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program 2014-2020, the eligible value being 15.5 million lei.

During the first phase of the project, the medium voltage network in Giurgiu and in four other localities in the county was partially modernized, for the benefit of over 12,800 customers. Also, on a distance of 2.5 km, between Oinacu and Plopșoru, the medium voltage network was moved underground. The works also consisted in the modernization of 47 secondary substations in the county residence town and in the four rural localities, including by switching from the aerial structure on the pole to placing it in concrete envelope. The buried portion of the network, as well as the secondary substations that have been relocated on the ground, will also help prevent damage that can be generated by extreme weather because these network elements will no longer be directly exposed to them.  Regarding the low voltage network, the project consisted in replacing the low voltage cables over a total distance of about 20 km with modern, twisted-pair ones, serving the four localities in the county included in the project.

Another component of the project carried out in this first stage is the development and implementation, with own funds, of an analytics cloud platform for the measurement-collection process through which data from all smart meters of the distribution operator is processed.

"Five localities in Giurgiu County, four in rural areas and the residence town, now benefit from a smart grid and an improved distribution service, following this investment, supported via POIM and with own funds. Also, within the project, a digital platform was developed for aggregating customer consumption data with smart meters. It was developed by the Rețele Electrice group of companies, for the benefit of customers in all three regions where these distribution operators are present. As for customers with smart meters in Giurgiu county, they can monitor their electricity consumption in real time and thus adopt more energy-efficient behaviors. We will also continue the installation of smart meters in as many households in the area as possible," said Mihai Pește, general manager of Rețele Electrice companies.

The project, initiated in April 2020, led to the modernization of parts of the network that provide customers with the improvement of the technical quality of the electricity distribution service, at a standardized quality level.

The third component of the project will be carried out in its second phase, financed by the Sustainable Development Program. This component aims to increase the quality of the distribution service by implementing an integrated platform for advanced management of the distribution network.
